About Gods and Monsters

Gods and Monsters is one of the largest mythology encyclopedias on the web—a growing collection of over 2,300 entries covering gods, monsters, spirits, and mythical beings from more than 100 cultural traditions worldwide.

From the Olympian gods of ancient Greece to the shape-shifting fox spirits of Korea, from Yoruba thunder deities to the stone giants of Abenaki tradition, we document the full breadth of humanity’s mythological imagination. Every entry is researched, written, and organized to be accessible to scholars, students, and anyone who’s ever fallen down a mythology rabbit hole.

What Makes This Site Different

Most mythology resources online focus on the well-known traditions: Greek, Norse, Egyptian. Gods and Monsters covers those too, but the real depth of this project lies in the traditions that other sources overlook. We have dedicated sections on Ghanaian mythology, Maltese folklore, Mapuche legends, Chamorro spirit lore, Basque mythology, Tatar traditions, and dozens more.

Every entry is organized across three axes: by region and culture, by creature type (gods, monsters, spirits, shapeshifters, undead), and alphabetically. This taxonomy reflects how different people think about mythology and makes it easy to explore by geography, theme, or name.

Who’s Behind This

Hannibal Hills is the creator and editor of Gods and Monsters. What started as a personal obsession with hunting down obscure myths and monsters has grown into a years-long research project spanning every inhabited continent. Hannibal has spent thousands of hours sourcing, writing, and cataloguing these entries, driven by the conviction that mythology isn’t a relic of the past but a living map of how cultures make sense of the world.

Beyond the encyclopedia, Hannibal publishes a free daily newsletter on Substack exploring the myths, connections, and curiosities behind the entries.

Our Pledge to You

Gods and Monsters is completely free from ad banners and intrusive pop-ups. Our content will never be locked behind a paywall, and we will never collect or sell your personal information. The site exists because these stories matter and deserve to be accessible to everyone.

We invite you to explore the archives. Each entry is a portal to another world, offering a new perspective on our own through the lens of ancient narratives. Whether you’re a scholar, student, or enthusiast, Gods and Monsters is here to inspire your journey into the mythic realms.

A note on how we work: Gods and Monsters uses AI tools as part of the research and drafting process, with all content reviewed, edited, and curated by Hannibal. Think of it as a very well-read research assistant. The editorial voice, accuracy standards, and creative direction are entirely human.
